A practical guide to aligning technical requirements, order quantity and delivery terms when sourcing steelmaking raw materials.
Start with the intended use
Pellets and direct reduced iron are different stages of the steel value chain. Direct reduction removes chemically bound oxygen from iron oxide pellets or lump ore without melting, producing DRI. See Midrex’s explanation of direct reduced iron for the process.
Look beyond one analysis value
Iron content, impurity composition, reducibility and mechanical strength matter when selecting feed material. Suitability depends on the consuming plant’s conditions. These considerations are covered in Midrex’s technical guide to pellet selection.
For an enquiry, share your plant’s acceptance limits and ask the supplier for the consignment’s analysis, test date and sampling method. A general product specification is different from a test result for a particular shipment.
Make quotations comparable
- State the application and required chemical and physical characteristics.
- Specify the quantity, destination and delivery window.
- Compare currency, weight unit, delivery location, freight responsibility and payment terms on the same basis.
- Agree on quality-control documents, weighing arrangements and shipment acceptance.
